Gross National Happiness (GNH)

Published: Thursday, 03 April 2014

One of the intriguing concepts gaining worldwide applause and attention today is the Gross National Happiness (GNH) initiated by the fourth King.

It is the development philosophy of Bhutan which reinstates the intangible and relative theory of ‘happiness’ above the economic and materialistic concept of Gross Development Product (GDP).

The national plans and priorities are designed to encompass and achieve a ‘general well being’ of the people. The aim is to make every people in Bhutan happy. It is imperative that people will not only be happy only when their purse is full.

GNH is pursued through four spears, called the four pillars, of balanced and equitable socio-economic development, environment conservation, cultural preservation and good governance.

The philosophy of GNH goes way beyond the conventional economic theories and tries to encompass the happiness element to constitute development.
